It has become evident over the past couple of months that the yard is teaming with nature – red in tooth and claw! Whether it is the lateness of this year’s Spring, or the sudden arrival of Summer we are not sure, but in addition to our usual quota of duck families we have been seeing swallows, wagtails, robins and a woodpecker and we can hear both a cuckoo and a solitary owl. More unusual visitors have included a large poplar hawk moth, as well as several one-metre long grass snakes. There is no need to be frightened of these shy creatures who have been observed basking in the sunshine in the flowerbeds, they are completely harmless and will just slither away as soon as they realise they are being watched. We have also had reports of ‘toads the size of dinner plates!’ and although we think this might be a slight exaggeration, this year’s toad population is certainly abundant and seems to be larger, toad-for-toad, than in past years! Please let us know if you see any further unusual wildlife activity on the marina.

This is where the snakes were spotted. Bob mounted snakewatch in order to get these great pictures and video footage!

We would like to thank all our green- fingered boaters who have been working so hard on their flowerbeds. Following our efforts last year to tidy up the edge of the grass along the marina, and fight back the weeds, this Summer has seen an explosion of colour which really reached its peak in time for the Regatta. It was a great show!
